2012 Rolex 24

What: 24 Hour Endurance Race

When: Starts at 3:30 PM on Saturday, January 28^th, ends 3:30 PM, January 29^th

Where: Daytona International Speedway road course, Daytona Beach, Florida

Two Race Classes:

1. DP (Daytona Prototypes)

DP cars are pure, mid-engine, carbon fiber, race cars powered by various engines, including Porsche, Ford, BMW, Chevrolet, Lexus, Mazda, etc.

2. GT (Gran Turismo)

GT class cars are tube frame race cars with body panels that make them resemble their production car counterparts.

Reasons to Attend:

1. 2011 will mark the 50^th anniversary of endurance racing at Daytona. To celebrate the occasion, race organizers have made an effort to locate and display all previous winning cars. That alone will be worth the price of admission.

2. Florida weather is typically nicer than Indiana weather in January.

3. The 24 hour race does not draw huge crowds so motels, restaurants, and tickets are readily available and reasonably priced.

4. A Porsche corral where Porschephiles can park and congregate is a tradition at the Rolex. If your automotive interests extend beyond Porsches, you will also find corrals for other brands.

5. Porsche powered cars do well at the Daytona endurance race. In fact, Porsche has been the overall winner 22 times. Porsche won the race 11 consecutive times from 1977 to 1987. Porsche also won the race 18 out of 23 years from 1968 to 1991.

6. If you cannot afford a new Porsche or attend the Porsche driving school, this might be your last chance to watch Hurley Haywood in action. Hurley has driven a Brumos Porsche to victory 5 times at Daytona. He also won LeMans 3 times, Sebring twice, and was the fastest rookie at the Indy 500 in 1980.

7. The race teams are very professional and well funded. Usually, 60 or more cars start the race and most have the people, spare parts, and organization required to still be running at the end.

8. The DP class will be a little more interesting this year as it will be the first outing for several well-funded Corvette cars. The Corvette cars will have some recognizable Corvette styling features and engines prepared by Earnhardt/Childress.

9. Each car has 4 or 5 drivers, many of them are very recognizable, top professionals.

10. You don't have to stay in a certain seat for the entire 24 hours. You can come and go and generally move around and watch the race from many different vantage points.

11. For those who wish to stay at the track for everything, camping inside and outside the track, plus motor home and RV parking is available.

Porsche Developing a Self-Driving System for their Cars

In 2014, Porsche plans to release self-driving cars. The speed and acceleration will be controlled by InnoDrive, a suped up version of Adaptive Cruise Control which takes in info about road terrain as well as sensor data about surrounding vehicles. Read more.

Additionally, an honorary Bloomington Porsche Club member and website manager, Sarah Loos, is involved in research on the safety of distributed Adaptive Cruise Control at Carnegie Mellon University. Read more.

Texas Mile

Bloomington Porsche Club honorary member Eldon P. Slick of Tucson, AZ, and member, Bruce Loos of Roanoke, Indiana, will attend the Texas Mile speed trials at Goliad, Texas on October 16th-18th. Slick has entered his highly modified 1979 Turbo Porsche in the Street Speed Trial E class. The event is a one mile time trial held on a closed, 8000' long, airport runway. Slick, a veteran of many years of Top Alcohol drag racing, has also built several V-8 powered, 911/930 Porsches and raced in several Silver State Classic open road races. 1. Browse to http://www.flickr.com/groups/bloomporsche/ and click the “Join” link on the Bloomington Porsche Club group pool page.
2. If you are not already signed in, you will now be prompted to sign in to Flickr with your Yahoo ID and password. If you do not have a Yahoo ID, click the “Sign Up” link and follow the steps required to create a Yahoo ID.
3. Click the “Join this group” button when asked to confirm your selection. After clicking the button, you will be redirected back to the Bloomington Porsche Club group pool page.
4. Click the arrow beside “You” in the main navigation menu (upper left hand) and then choose “Upload Photos and Videos”.
5. Follow the steps required to upload photos or videos to your Flickr account. When you are finished you will be redirected to your personal Flickr photostream.
6. To add the photos or videos you uploaded to the Bloomington Porsche Club group pool, click the arrow beside “Groups” in the main navigation menu and then choose “Your Groups”. On the next page, click the "Bloomington Porsche Club" link under the “Groups you belong to” heading.
7. Click the “Add photos or video” link on the Bloomington Porsche Club group pool page.
8. Select the photos and videos that you would like to add, and then click the “Add to group” button. After clicking the button, you will be redirected back to the Bloomington Porsche Club group pool page.
9. Your photos have been added to the Bloomington Porsche Club group and will appear on the website slideshow within a few days!
